Long term care is the kind of care one needs when it is no longer possible to perform the everyday activities of life without assistance or supervision.
It would be difficult to think of anything more traumatic than having to leave the security and comfort of your own home to spend the remainder of your life in a nursing home.
Yet it happens. And to more and more of us. In fact, each year, an estimated 70,000 people have to sell their homes to provide funds for residential and nursing home care.
Of course, some take the view that there is little point in worrying on the grounds that “I won’t care where I am ‘cos I won’t know where I am!” Alas, this attitude completely (selfishly?) overlooks the trauma and worry of the loved ones left to cope on their own.
So, what are we talking about? Without beating about too many bushes we are talking about how we are going to die. There are only two ways: die quickly or linger.
And it is the lingering that creates the problems. The inability to perform the ordinary activities of life without assistance. Such things as washing and bathing, going to the loo, getting dressed, moving around, eating, etc. No matter how fit we are now, the question we don’t want to ask ourselves is, “Will we always be able to do these things on our own?” Just look around you . . .
Ronald Reagan was a prime example. And Terry Thomas. And Harold Wilson. Etc., etc., etc.
