Long Term Care

DO THESE STATISTICS BOTHER YOU?

You have expressed concern at what would happen if, due to a deterioration in your mental or physical health, you eventually reach a stage where either or both of you need assistance to cope with the normal activities of everyday life.

Most of us believe it won’t happen to us.  Alas, statistics paint a different picture:

A picture of a nursing home in pleasant surroundings where all of the residents receive Long Term Care.
  • People are living longer but not necessarily in better health.  One in six of the UK population already cares for an elderly relative.

  • One in four of the elderly can expect to spend their last years in a nursing home.

  • Almost 50% of those over 65 have a disabling condition.

  • Between 10% and 15% of people aged 65 and over cannot leave home or go for a walk.

  • One in four men will need full time nursing care before they die. The same picture applies to women – except that the figures become one in three.

  • By the age of 80, seven out of ten will need some form of Long Term Care.

  • 100,000 people suffer from a stroke each year and 635,000 over 65 year olds have some form of dementia.

  • Around 70,000 homes are sold each year by their owners to meet the costs of Long Term care.
